Zachary Jason Williams was born on December 19, 2002 at 31 weeks gestation. He weighed 3 lbs and was 16 1/2 inches long. Surprisingly, he was able to breathe on his own from birth, and was never on a respirator or ventilator. He was sent immediately after birth to Vassar Brothers Medical Center's NICU. At 8 days old, a routine head ultrasound revealed an Intraventricular Hemorrhage (IVH). These brain hemorrhages are graded on a scale from 1 - 4. His was diagnosed as a 3 at that time. This came as a shock to everyone because he was doing so well, and showed no signs of distress. He continued to do well, despite the hemorrhage. He ate, gained weight, and was sent home one day shy of 4 weeks.
